Lake Murray Real Estate Update 12-29-2010

DNR will consider speed limits and boater education – Boating safety issues will be on DNR’s list of things to do for next legislative session. According to spokesman Brett Witt the agency will investigate the need for new regulations, including speed limits and mandatory training for those who boat on the state’s public waterways. And in spite of the budget crunch, the agency hopes to hire at least 10 new officers to replace almost 60 positions lost due to past budget cuts. The agency needs to maintain a minimum core of officers in order to perform its functions required by law. Witt stated that information recently published in the State newspaper article, “Push for speed limits and boater education dropped,” was incorrect, a result of a miscommunication on his part. The article has renewed public interest in boating safety concerns, which heightened last May when 4 lives were lost in two boating accidents near Goat Island and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Station.

New Lake Murray Safety Consortium meets – The Lake Murray Safety Consortium recently held its’ fourth meeting this fall aboard the Lake Tours vessel, the “Southern Patriot.” The meeting was hosted by the Lake Murray Association with 16 attendees representing the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Lake Murray Power Squadron, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Dept., the Newberry Sheriff’s Dept., SCE&G and a Lake Resident. Dave Landis, LMA president, reported the Association had received a check from Sea Tow for $1,050 part of which was to be used for the purchase of “Chem Lights” which are used as a temporary get home fix by the enforcement agencies for boats who have lost their running lights at night. DNR indicated they have begun a boating education for School Resource Officers in order that the latter can begin teaching an 8 hr. course at the middle school level.
