Local Marine hero honored – He says he is no hero, just a Marine doing his duty. Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter was told different last week at the South Carolina Statehouse. Last November Carpenter took the full blast from a Taliban hand grenade while attempting to save the life of his good friend and fellow Marine, Corporal Nick Eufrazio.
In the Senate chambers, the Lexington County man was recognized by state Sen. Jake Knotts and other lawmakers for his actions. A little publicly known fact was reported by Knotts. When Carpenter was carried off the plane in Germany, the first person to greet him was Master Sergeant Charles Williams of the SC Air National Guard. Williams, from Chapin, was on military leave from the Senate’s Sergeant at Arms Office, serving his second tour in Germany and assigned an an assistant chaplain to the Intensive Care Unit for the Wounded Warrior Project. Carpenter does not recall the Master Sergeant’s being there, he was unconscious for more than 10 days following the catastrophic injuries in Afghanistan. His life hung in the balance for days while Williams remained by his side praying and reminding him that he was there representing the folks back home. Sen. Knotts described Carpenter as the epitome of an American hero and, “We are blessed to have him in our presence today.”

Adding the amenity is important to residents who are dog owners, Mayor Randy Halfacre said. “A lot of people think it’s a good idea and an amenity that the town should offer.” Halfacre said. He said citizens have been requesting the facility for more than a year.
