Amazon.com to hire 1,249 full time – Online retail giant Amazon.com is coming to Lexington County with a $100 million distribution center. A company official said construction on the 1 million square foot building at the county’s Saxe Gotha Industrial Park would start in the next month and be completed by the end of fall 2011. In two or three years, it could be at full employment with 1,249 full time and 2,500 temporary, seasonal workers.
Lexington County Council and state officials including Gov. Mark Sanford, announced Amazon’s investment late Tuesday. The Chronicle reported last week that the project, kept secret until Tuesday, would be Amazon.com since one of its distribution strategies is to locate near UPS hubs like the one at Columbia Metropolitan Airport. The county agreed to a fee-in-lieu of taxes agreement cutting the tax rate to 6%. The state kicked in $2.5 million to the county to buy half the property for the project, said Commerce Secretary Joe Taylor.
Lexington’s future coming into focus – Recreation, beautification and cultural facilities are part of Lexington’s vision for the future. So town leaders want to include them in a study of that vision now under way. “It will provide an extra set of eyes to prioritize and make recommendations on what is needed for the future growth of the town,” said Mayor Randy Halfacre. That could include new soccer fields at an old town landfill, beautification projects and road intersections, neighborhood greenway trails, parks, parking facilities or a performing arts center for Lexington. He said the group may also suggest other needs council hasn’t looked at.
Cayce Christmas Tree has a purpose – For the past 28 years Ann Malpass has chaired the lighting of the Cayce Christmas Tree. This year the annual event not only served as the beginning of the holiday season, it also resulted in the collection of three truck loads of food for God’s Helping Hands. “I am particularly proud of the fact that in addition to the food, the Woman’s Club of Cayce was able to present $1,081 to the efforts to help provide food for those who are going without in the community,” she told the Chronicle. The Thursday tree lighting and food gathering was attended by several hundred who braved one of the coldest nights of the year. Mayor Elise Partin brought holiday greetings from the city. Students from Busbee Creative Arts Academy, Davis & Taylor Elementary Schools and the Brookland Cayce High School Band performed. The Woman’s Club of Cayce established the Annual Memorial Tree Lighting in 1977. The late Mabel Bonnette served as chair for the first five years. When health problems necessitated her stepping down, Malpass assumed the mantle.
Sixth Annual West Columbia Christmas tree lighting a success – “Sue Meisner did a superb job.” Jenny Cunningham was commenting on the annual tree lighting at West Columbia’s City Hall on Friday night. The city administration praised Meisner for stepping in coordinating the program and the Christmas Reception in the New Brookland Room at City Hall. More than 300 residents attended the program that featured caroling, the West Columbia Community Hand bell choir, local pastors and the West Columbia Community Chorus led by Tim Turner. The Fabulous Falcon Chorus from Fulmer Middle School brought applause from the audience. As emcee Tim Miller said, “They certainly lived up to their name. They are truly fabulous.”
Music and dance academy bring fun to nursing homes – “We never see anything like this,” commented the wheelchair bound resident at the Lowman Home. Christy Shealy Mills hears that many times over during the holiday season as she and her dancers take their annual holiday nursing home show on the road. This year, the dancers of the Music and Dance Academy will present their show 13 times at area nursing homes in addition to the other public performances. Bright shiny costumes, young faces and lively music make this show different for the residents. Each year for 34 years, Christy has trekked around the Midlands, even on Christmas Eve one year.
